Two Things I Have Learned During This Week
I really enjoyed getting to hear Professor Flick's lecture. She did a great job talking about health promotion and how occupational therapist are important to public health. One thing that I learned was about "occupational deprivation". Professor Flick defined it as "the lack of access to engagement in an array of self-selected occupations with meaning to the individual, family, or community." Another concept I found interesting was the three types of intervention that can help reduce threats to our health. The first is "Primary". These include preventative measures like immunizations and prevention programs. Next, is "Secondary"; these are resources that reduce the impact of a disease. For example, annual screenings. Finally, "Tertiary" are programs or resources that limit ongoing illnesses. This can include rehabilitation units. Finally I think Professor Flick did a great job giving different emerging areas that Occupational Therapists could help practice more health promotion and prevention strategies. One that stood out to me was after-school programs for at-risk youth. The earlier we start teaching kids about healthy strategies. If they learn these techniques early, they could carry this into their adult lives or to their relatives at home. This could be anything from diabetes care, clean hygiene, and healthier dietary habits.
